The dust has settled at the SPD Bank Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai, and the field for The International 2026 has been ruthlessly pruned. After an intense group stage and a high-stakes elimination round, only eight teams remain in the hunt for the Aegis of Champions.
The group stage, played on the fresh Patch 7.41e, turned out to be a graveyard for some of the season’s most hyped rosters. While the favorites were expected to cruise, the reality of the Swiss-system format proved unforgiving. TEAM VISION emerged as the standout performer, navigating the group stage with a pristine 4-0 record, while stalwarts like Team Liquid and Nigma Galaxy also secured their spots in the upper bracket.
The Meta: A Treant-Centric Puzzle
If there is one thing we learned in Shanghai, it is that you do not leave Treant Protector open. The hero has been a focal point of the tournament, boasting a 100% contest rate and being first-banned in over 100 games. Its ability to control lanes, provide global healing to structures, and offer a BKB-piercing root has forced teams to burn their first ban phase almost exclusively on the hero. With Patch 7.41e still being dissected, the draft priority remains heavily skewed toward sustain and map control, with Doom, Beastmaster, and Slardar rounding out the most contested offlane picks.
The Road to the Aegis
The transition to the double-elimination bracket starting August 20th brings a new layer of pressure. Defending champions Team Falcons arrive at the playoffs with a target on their backs, yet their inconsistent form throughout 2026 leaves many questioning if they can replicate their past glory. Meanwhile, Team Liquid is chasing a historic third TI title, and their current form suggests they are peaking exactly when it matters.
With eight teams left, every series is essentially a final. Whether it is the tactical brilliance of the lower-bracket survivors or the calculated dominance of the group stage leaders, the coming days in Shanghai will define the legacy of this year's professional circuit.
