The professional Dota 2 scene has been rocked by a massive roster shake-up just days before the start of the year’s most prestigious event. Two-time The International champion Topias “Topson” Taavitsainen is officially back, stepping in to represent LGD Gaming at The International 2026.
This emergency move follows the sudden and permanent ban of LGD’s young mid laner, Santiago “TaiLung” Agüero Gustavo. Following an investigation into competitive integrity, tournament organizers moved to disqualify the 17-year-old from TI 2026, with PGL issuing a lifetime ban from all its future events. The loss of a core player so close to the tournament start date left LGD in a precarious position, but the organization acted with remarkable speed to secure one of the most decorated players in the game's history.
A Return to the Biggest Stage
Topson’s return is a massive narrative shift for the upcoming tournament. After his third-place finish with Tundra Esports at The International 2024, the Finnish mid laner stepped away from the professional circuit to complete his military service. Despite his hiatus, he remained a constant presence in high-MMR matchmaking, keeping his mechanics sharp for a moment just like this.
LGD’s decision to bring in a veteran of Topson’s caliber speaks to their ambition. While the team had to scramble, they have acquired a player who thrives under the pressure of the main stage. His unique hero pool and unconventional decision-making have defined championship runs in the past, and his integration into the LGD roster will be the primary talking point as the event kicks off.
What This Means for LGD
The addition of Topson provides more than just a temporary fix; it injects a level of tactical unpredictability that few other stand-ins could offer. LGD now faces the challenge of building synergy with their new mid laner in a matter of days. However, given Topson’s history of joining teams and immediately elevating their performance, expectations for the squad have shifted overnight.
