Fortnite Pirate Token: 1 in 137,500 — every chest reward explained

myesports ·

Epic has published the Treasure Hunt drop rates. Here is what the numbers mean, what each reward gives you, and how the five Gizmos work.

Most chests contain familiar loot. In Fortnite Treasure Hunters, opening one can also award a separate treasure. Pirate Shop Access has attracted particular attention because it lets players claim eligible Shop items for free during a limited access period. Until recently, the question was just how rare that reward was.

There is now a published baseline: 1 in 137,500 per chest in a normal match, without a boost. Fortnite Status announced the figures on November 7, replacing the earlier unverified estimates. That is approximately 0.000727% per opening.

What can a chest actually award?

This table covers the special Treasure Hunt rewards, in addition to ordinary weapons, ammunition and healing items. It does not mean every chest awards one of these seven prizes.

RewardWhat it isChance per chestApproximately
Gold outfitThe weekly character appearance1 in 1,562,5000.000064%
Pirate Shop AccessTokens to claim eligible Shop items for free1 in 137,5000.000727%

Loading ScreenArtwork shown during loading1 in 2720.367647%
Any GizmoConsumable tool for Sprites1 in 1270.787402%

The Gizmo figure is the chance of receiving any Gizmo, not a separate 1-in-127 chance for each of the five tools. The percentages have been calculated from the published ratios and rounded.

Cosmetics change appearance or add music and artwork to your collection. A Pickaxe is the appearance of your harvesting tool; a Back Bling is an accessory worn on your character's back. A decal decorates a vehicle body. A Jam Track is a music track, while a Loading Screen is the artwork displayed during loading. These are not alternative names for stronger weapons.

What does Pirate Shop Access unlock?

The reward includes two tokens for different calendar years: one for 2026 and another for 2027. Activating a token starts 14 days of access to eligible Shop items at no cost. Items you claim remain in your collection after that access period ends.

This does not unlock Fortnite's entire historical catalogue. It applies to eligible items available in the Shop while your access is active. Real-money bundles, Battle Pass levels and gifts to other players are excluded. There is also a limit of one new Sidekick.

The 14 days begin when you activate the token. Before using it, check the in-game terms and activation deadline for that specific year. The deadline for activation and the duration of the access period are different things.

Which cosmetics are available this week?

The reward category stays the same, but the specific item can rotate weekly. For Week 2, which began on November 8, the current reward listings identify the following items:

CategoryWeek 2 item
Gold outfitSolid Gold Lil Uzi Vert
Back BlingDiamond and Gold
Jam TrackLondon
Loading ScreenSo Kawaii
VehicleCadillac CT5-V Blackwing + Golden Llama Crew

This is a November 8 snapshot, not a permanent reward list for the whole season. Solid Gold A$AP Rocky and the G-Wagon, for example, belong to the previous week's listing. Check the active Treasure Hunt tab in the game for the current rotation.

The five Gizmos, explained

Sprites are collectible companions with abilities during a match. Extraction secures the Sprite you are carrying for your collection. Sprite Dust is a resource used by the Sprite system; it is not V-Bucks.

Gizmos are consumable tools for that system. Hold the pickaxe button to open the Gizmo Wheel and choose the tool you want to use.

GizmoWhat it does
Portable ExtractorExtracts the Sprite you are carrying from anywhere, without travelling to an Extraction Site.
Extraction AcceleratorQuickly summons the extraction crate at an Extraction Site.
Sprite LocatorLocates a buried chest containing a random Sprite, which may be a duplicate.
Lucky LocatorLocates a chest containing a Sprite missing from your collection.
Golden FireworkA firework that displays your name and scatters Sprite Dust.

The Lucky Locator finds a Sprite missing from your collection. It is not a Pirate Token compass and does not guarantee Pirate Shop Access. The ordinary Sprite Locator can lead to a Sprite you already own.

Unused Gizmos carry over between matches, but their inventory is seasonal. Check the expiry timer in the game. They are not permanent cosmetics like an outfit or Back Bling.

What changes during Treasure Hours?

Treasure Hours are specific windows with improved odds. The announcement described 1.5× for Pirate Shop Access, 7.5× for the gold outfit, and 10× for the vehicle and decal. In the second November 7 window in the United States, the token boost rose to 2× and the gold outfit boost to 10×.

ConditionPirate Token chance per chest
No boost1 in 137,500
1.5× boost≈ 1 in 91,667
2× boost1 in 68,750

That second window ran from 04:00 to 06:00 on Sunday, November 8, in Greece and has ended. Boosted rates are not active permanently. Check the next announcement for future Treasure Hours rather than assuming that the same schedule or multipliers will return.

“1 in 137,500” is not a countdown

It does not mean that opening 137,500 chests guarantees a token. It describes the probability of a single attempt. The following calculation shows why that distinction matters:

Chest openingsChance of at least one token
1,0000.72%
10,0007.01%
137,50063.21%

These are mathematical examples, not measured player results. They assume independent openings, a constant probability of 1/137,500, no boost, and no other mechanism changing that probability. The probability of at least one success after n openings is 1 − (1 − 1/137,500)ⁿ.

Publishing the odds does not reveal every part of the reward system's internal implementation. It does show why a particular chest count should not be presented as a guaranteed target.

Where do the rewards appear?

Treasure Hunt rewards are linked to chests in Battle Royale and Zero Build. The guide lists normal, rare, Sprite, buried, Wanted Poster and Relic Chests. A special reward appears as an on-screen notification and is added to your account; you do not need to pick it up from the ground like a weapon.

Epic also says players cannot receive the same treasure twice, except for Gizmos. That statement alone does not let us calculate a different personal drop rate after collecting a particular cosmetic.

The practical takeaway is straightforward: Pirate Shop Access is extremely rare, the gold outfit is rarer still, and boosts improve the odds without guaranteeing either reward. The tables also explain what the other treasures are when they appear during a match.
